Engineering | CE 003

In the previous post, the evolution of man and human civilization have been discussed within the relatively narrower scope of the blog. The civilizations went on flourishing in different parts of the earth. As a consequence, science and engineering also went on flourishing in various avenues in a natural way. At the very primitive stage, science was merely an observation and experience but in course of time, documentation and experimentation also grew up. Finding out laws behind the scientific phenomena came much later.

Science and scientific applications are being used by man from the ancient times. But the reasons of scientific benefits were unknown at the primitive stage of civilization. Gradually, as the time passed, man felt thirsty to gain more and more knowledge and this thirst and quest to knowledge enabled man to discover and invent many things including the laws of science and engineering for which the man is what it is now. Applications of science emerged as engineering and engineering started developing in diversified branches.

Human civilizations have done, are doing and will do everything required for their survival without any compromise. But right at this time we have understood that such activities may also yield some detrimental effects on the eco-balance and environment balance. It is thus an obligation of engineers while doing an engineering job to take extensive precaution against any damage in ecosystem and environment since such damage will lead towards the destruction of human civilization. At this point of discussion, a question or curiosity naturally arises in our mind. What is ecosystem, eco-balance, environment and environment balance ?

All human societies along with other living and non-living, natural and non-natural elements of the earth, as we see those by our naked eyes, are collectively called ecosystem. The natural give and take relationship already existing among all these elements of the ecosystem is called eco-balance. Environment is the overall local surroundings of any living and non-living, natural and non-natural elements on the earth. Mutual and natural give and take relationship among all living and non-living elements of a particular environment is called environment balance. Having understood these, we are all set to understand engineering.

Engineering is an art of applying scientific and natural laws to find out an acceptable and practical solution required for maintenance, development and protection of human civilization. Engineering was developed as the human civilizations were flourished in different parts of the earth. Engineering inventions / discoveries are not just an accident. It is due to man’s inherent thirst for need and quest.

The engineers are responsible to build, maintain, develop and protect the society and civilization in a scientific manner without hampering Eco-balance and Environmental balance. Many engineering / technology branches have been evolved so far. Of which, a few are randomly mentioned below. A graduation course on those branches is available in various universities/institutions of the globe.
